Invasive Species Management

Invasive species grow in our area, but did not evolve with our population.

Invasive plant species can be very aggressive, outcompeting native trees and flora that provide shade, carbon storage, and habitats that our native wildlife depend on. In order for ecological landscapes to be successful, invasive species removal and a comprehensive management plan is necessary.

Our approach to Invasive Species Management

  • Identification. We identify and/or mark native species present in the area to preserve them. Not only will we locate and identify invasive species, we will also point out the beneficial, native plants already growing on the property. We will take stock and make every effort to encourage the preservation and success of existing natives.
  • Clipping Back Invasive Species. Using either hand clippers, a weed trimmer, or brush hog attachment on our mini skid-steer, we clip back invasive plant species so they are of manageable size before removing the root systems. At times, continuous clipping of invasive species can slowly diminish their strength.
  • Digging Out of Root Systems. Hand digging/pulling is done in sensitive areas equipment can not access and/or native plant species are prevalent. When accessible and conditions allow, we will use our mini excavator to dig out root systems. We may also use the mini excavator and/or mini skid-steer to transport and load large piles of invasive plant debris into our trucks to haul away.
  • Planting Large Native Trees. By creating a canopy of trees, light is blocked and invasive species are discouraged.
  • Ongoing Maintenance. Invasive species management is not a one-time, quick-fix. It will require ongoing maintenance to prevent grow-back of invasive plant species.
